Object: Egyptian fayence statuette of Thoth

Material: Turquoise faience.

Period: Late Period of ancient Egypt.
26th to 31st dynasty,
664 BC to 332 BC.

Description:    Thoth figurine with human body and head of an ibis standing in a striding pose, a pillar at its back and a rectangular flat base under its feet. The god wears a short kilt and a wig. Arms hanging straight down.
Elegant and slender figurine modeled in great detail.

Background: The god Thoth is known as moon god since at least the Old Kingdom. Later his functions changed and expanded. Thoth was said to be the inventor of the hieroglyphs and the divine scribe. Finally, he was associated with several academic functions. The god could be depicted as ibis, monkey or hybrid with human body depending on the context. The type of statuette described here is attributed by Petrie as god of wisdom and script.

Dimensions: 11cm height without modern base, 15cm with base.

Condition: Very good overall condition. Beak and part of the head restored, broken and re-attached above the feet. Modern black inscription to the back of the rear pillar. Mounted on a modern wooden based painted black.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2019 from G. Vandervort, USA. Previously US-american private possession. Acquired from the US-american Rucinski collection that was built in the 1950ies.
