Description:    Terra cotta figurine of the Egyptian dwarf god Bes standing naked on a box. His hands rest on his thighs. His tongue is stuck out. The god wears a leonine mask with a snub nose, stylized beard and furrowed brow. Summary treatment of the back, typical for such terra cotta pieces in Ptolemaic and Roman times.

Background: Bes was a god to protect from evil. He was the patron of children and pregnant women.

Dimensions: 78mm high without base, 96mm high with base.

Condition: Very good condition. Headdress missing, probably the usual plumed crown. The rest of the figurine complete. Small stable cracks at the back of the head. The front is preserved in great detail. Mounted with a pin on a black wood base.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2019 from the German private collection D. R. Acquired into the collection in June 2017 from Dr. B. Mueller, Ostracon Gallery, Switzerland. Acquired by him in February 2017 from Gerhard Hirsch Nachfolger, Germany (Lot no. 760). Previously in the Sothern German private collection G. D. Previously in a German private collection from Berlin, acquired in 1946.
From the time in the Berlin private collection, dated February 1947, there is a copy of a written note by Prof. Dr. Carl Bluemel, the director of the Berlin State Museums at that time.
