Description: |
Terra cotta head of the Egyptian dwarf god Bes. His face is framed by a grotesque beard and ears. He wears a feather crown on his head. Also the back side is finely worked.

Background: |
Bes was a god to protect from evil. He was the patron of children and pregnant women.

47mm high, 46mm wide, 14mm deep (without base).

Condition: |
Great condition. Some chips to the crown and smaller chips to the ears. Otherwise perfectly preserved with fine details. Even the brown paint is still largely intact. On the rear side modern inscription "146". Mounted by wire to an acrylic base.

Acquired by us in 2019 from the German private collection D. R. Acquired into the collection in December 2017 from Gorny & Mosch, Munich, Germany, auction 252, lot no. 515. Previously in auction 59 at Muenzen and Medaillen AG, June 16th 1981, lot no. 113. Previously in the Swiss collection of Kaethe Hartmann, Geneva. Acquired by her between approx. 1912 and 1954.
