INDVLGENTIA AVGG, IN CARTH in exergue Dea Caelestis, holding thunderbolt and scepter, seated facing on lion galloping right over rushing waters. Septimius made an expedition to North Africa in 202 - 203 A.D. During this time, he undertook a number of building projects to improve both the local infrastructure as well as the overall prestige of the various cities. Research suggests that one such project, to which the stream of water flowing from a rocky source depicted on the reverse refers, was the construction or renovation of an important aqueduct in Carthage or another structure crucial for fresh water supply for the city. Dea Caelestis was the patron goddess of Carthage. |
