Object: Fayence statuette of nursing Isis

Material: Fayence.

Period: Late Period of Ancient Egypt,
26th to 30th dynasty,
c. 664 BC to 332 BC.

Description:    Fayence statuette of Isis with Horus child. The goddess is seated on a throne. She holds her breast for her son Horus and supports his head with her other hand. The child is sitting on her lap. Isis is wearing a tripartite wig, the Uraeus snake is decorating her forehead. Above was probably once a horned sun disc as a headdress (now missing). A column of hieroglyphs is at the rear pillar reading "Iset [...] anch".

Background: The goddess Isis had many roles in Ancient Egypt. Nursing her child is obviously a depiction of her role as a mother. This popular motive of Egyptian art is also the archetype of the later Christian Nursing Madonna or Madonna lactans.

Dimensions: 51mm high without wooden base.

Condition: Good condition. Headdress is missing and some chips at the right rear side of the throne. Otherwise well preserved. Comes with a separate modern wooden base to which the statuette was once glued.
