Object: Skyphos (two-handled beaker)

Material: Red clay with black slip and traces of painting (originally probably in white and yellow).
So-called Gnathia pottery

Date 4th - 3rd century B.C.
Early Hellenistic epoch

Description:    High bell-shaped beaker with discus foot and two horizontal handles attached below the rim. Originally decorated with branches and band of dots.

Size: Height 89 mm, Diameter 82 mm (138 mm with handles).

Condition: Excellent condition, only minimal wear. The painting faded but still visible as a shadow.

Provenance: Acquired 2018 from the German family collection Bergweiler which was formed over several generations. Acquired by Ä. and P. Bergweiler May 23rd, 1965 at Antiquitätenhandlung Hermann Zirkel, Cologne, Germany. With note "... originating from the discontinued collection of museum in Cologne. Found to the north of Naples".
