Object: Apulian skyphos (small globular cup with two handles)

Material: Red clay with black slip, painted in white and red.
So-called Gnathia pottery

Date Late 4th - early 3rd century BC
Early Hellenistic epoch

Description:    Globular small bowl with two horizontally attached handles which are bent to the top and a high, conical foot. On each side a vine branch between the handles, foot decorated with bright red color.

Size: Height 75 mm, Diameter 137 mm with and 87 mm without the handles.

Condition: Very well preserved, delicate piece of ancient art. With wear and small chips, stable hairline crack at upper vessel part and lip. The handles are undamaged, rare for such a delicate vessel.

Provenance: Acquired 2019 in a traditional Munich auction house. From the inventory of Münzhandlung Karl Kress, Munich, which discontinued its business activities around 1986 (the last catalogue published by Karl Kress dates to this year). In the stock of Karl Kress before 1980.
