Description:    Guttos from the Greek colonies of Southern Italia, Magna Graecia. Typical shape known for these ancient oil vessels. Convex body on ring-shaped foot, steep shoulder decorated with grooves. Vertical, funnel-shaped spout. On top a central medaillon showing Triton riding a Pistrix, a sea monster from ancient greek mythology.

Size: Diameter 125mm with handles, height 80 mm.

Condition: Very good condition. Professionally restored from several fragments.

Provenance: Acquired 2019 from the heritage of Prof. Dr. K.H. Ritschel, who acquired his collection between 1960 and 1970 from international art dealers. One art gallery with which Prof. Ritschel had a particularly close relationship and where he acquired many objects for his collection was the Venetian antiquities gallery Scarpa.
Exported from Austria with permit of the authorities (Bundesdenkmalamt, Abteilung für bewegliche Denkmale).
Prof. Ritschel was decorated with many prizes and honors, among which was the Theodor-Körner Prize, the Karl-Renner Prize as well as the Large Cross of Honor of the Austrian Republic (das Große Ehrenkreuz der Republik Österreich) for his special merits. Prof. Ritschel was author of more than 50 books and over 500 columns on history ("Geschichte aktuell")..
