Object: Gorgeous hammer axe of the Single Grave culture

Material: Dark metamorphic rock.

Period: 2800 BC to 2200 BC.
Single Grave culture.
Northern European Eneolithic / Copper Age.

Description:    Flat hammer axe with elegant shape. Broadened at the mounting hole, circular butt. Towards the blade the axe is much higher than thick. The whole body is straight.
A wonderful piece, gorgeous workmanship, finely polished.

Dimensions: 161mm long, 29mm x 38mm at the butt. 30mm long blade. The mounting hole has a diameter of 25.5mm.

Condition: Small crack at the butt and a sherd formed, but it is not a chip. This spot does not disturb the overall impression and is only visible having a close look. Otherwise the axe is in prime condition. Worthy of being shown in a major museum.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2018 from the German private individual D. Seeland. Found by him in 1968 or 1969 at the bank of river Weser, opposite to the village Oberweser-Bursfelde, Germany. Shortly before the discovery the river Weser was dredged and sand and gravel was placed at the bank.
