Object: Hellenistic gold earring with antelope head

Material: Gold sheet and wire.

Period: Late 4th cent. BC to 3rd cent. BC,
Hellenistic.

Description:    The gold earring with the head of an antelope consists of a gold wire that is bent into an almost circular shape. The ends form an eyelet and hook closure. A fully plastic head made of thin gold sheet is attached to one end. Depicted is the head of an antelope with long twisted wire horns and long ears. Behind the head there are rich decorations made of applied, twisted wire. The piece is a beautiful example of typically Hellenistic jewellery design.

Dimensions: 22mm to 25mm diameter. 18mm length of the head.

Condition: Slightly flattened head, which is otherwise wonderfully preserved, including the filigree details. A small piece of stone, glass or enamel was probably once placed into the eye sockets.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the art market in 2022. Previously in the French private collection Levy. Acquired into the collection in 1982 at the auction house Hôtel Drouot, Paris.
