Object: Italic Quatrefoil Fibula

Material: Bronze.

Period: Early Iron Age,
8th cent. BC,
Italic.

Description:    Bronze fibula with four spirals in one plane. So-called quatrefoil fibula or double spectacle brooch. A lozenge shaped bronze sheet covers the center of the front side. A wire flattened in the middle is attached to the rear side. One end forms a spring and a pin. The other end forms a mount for the pin.
This fibula is a typical Italic type from the beginning of Iron Age. But variants of the type have also been found in Austria and surrounding countries. They are therefore connected to the early Hallstatt culture.

Dimensions: 41mm x 39mm rectangular area. Approx. 10mm height.

Condition: Front part of the pin broken and missing, the remaining part of the pin including mount still intact. Spirals in very good condition. Slight restauration and conservation efforts at the surface. Extremely nice overall appearance.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2018 on the German art market. Previously on the Austrian art market. Since c. 2014 the fibula has been with Antiken-Kabinett, Bernhard Gackstaetter, Frankfurt a. M., Germany (copy of his report is available). Sold to him from the Neumeier family collection (Reinheim, Germany). Acquired for the collection in the 1960ies.

References: A nearly identical fibula is in the Harvard Art Museums/Arthur M. Sackler Museum, object no. 1987.135.7.
