Object: Celtic to Roman spindle whorl

Material: Dark clay.

Period: Approx. 3rd cent. BC to 6th cent. AD.
Celtic to Roman times.

Description:    Large ancient spindle whorl made of clay. Irregular shape, probably originally torus shaped. The whorl has a central drill hole, one side is almost flat.

Dimensions: Height 67mm, diameter 100mm, drill hole diameter 21mm.

Condition: Some chippings, one crack. But basic shape intact.

Provenance: Acquired in 2012 at an art auction. Previously in the German private collection Huebner. Acquired into that collection before 1910.
