Object: Large decorated violin bow fibula

Material: Bronze.

Period: 12th cent. BC to 7th cent. BC.
Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age.

Description:    Big violin bow fibula with three coils. The bow of this wonderful piece is decorated by a geometric pattern. Two double coils frame the bow. The pin is connected to the body via a large single loop spring. The pin holder consists of a circular bronze sheet bent in the middle.
This type of brooch has similarities to the multiple coil violin-bow fibulae of Late Bronze Age Italy. However, an origin north of the alps is also possible. In any case, it is an impressive piece of jewellery because of its size and decoration.

Dimensions: 89mm length, 42mm width.

Condition: Worthy of being exhibited in a major museum. Body and pin original and intact, marvelous condition. Only minor damage to the pin holder. Beautiful dark green patina.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2017 from the German private collection Heimbach. Inherited from the German private collection Karl Naske. Acquired by Mr. Naske on the art market in the 1960ies or 1970ies.
