Athenian, possibly from the workshop of the Haimon painter.

Description:    High cylindrical lekythos. Flat shoulder, separated from the high neck. Discus-shaped foot.
The scene on the body shows a chariot with four horses. One person is mounting the chariot, holding a spear. Another person is walking to the right behind the horses. In front of the horses a person seated on a stool. Wand of winding lines with lotus buds and band of short rays on shoulder. Spout, handle, upper part of foot and lower body covered with black slip.

Size: Height 233 mm, diameter 95 mm

Condition: Foot and handle reattached. Otherwise body in very good condition. Typical surface wear for this vessel type. The black-figure scene of fine workmanship is excellently preserved.

Provenance: Acquired 2022 in a German auction house. Ex German private collection K. H. K. (1949 - 2005). Acquired before 1990, probably even before 1982 from the collection of Dr. Johannes Christof Roselt (1926 - 2004), director of the Bergisch Museum, Burg an der Wupper, Germany.
