Athenian, from the workshop of the Painter of Athens 1826

Description:    High cylindrical lekythos. Flat shoulder, separated from the high neck. Discus-shaped foot, separated from the body by two grooves.
The scene on the body shows a funerary stele between a young woman and a draped youth. Meander band above, separated from the scene by two lines. Black palmettes and pomegranates on the shoulder, egg-and-dots band above. Neck, spout, handle, upper part of foot and lower body covered with black slip.

Size: Height 244 mm, diameter 82 mm

Condition: Professionally reassembled from fragments, small parts professionally remodeled and retouched. Beautifully preserved original polychrome painting. Small chips and wear at foot and spout. Tiny bore hole from TL test in the lower body.

TL-analysis: A thermoluminescence analysis performed by Kotalla Laboratory in January 2016 (analysis Nr. 03R 200116) has confirmed the age of the vessel to be 2500 years (+/- 20%), which perfectly matches with the dating based on the style of the vessel.

Provenance: Acquired 2020 in a US auction house. Ex Gorny & Mosch Auktion 239 (June 2016, Lot 206). Ex Dean collection, London, acquired 1975.
