Object: Luristan battle axe with eyes

Material: Bronze.

Period: 2400 BC to 2000 BC.
Early Bronze Age.

Description:    Battle axe head made in Luristan, stylized as a bird's head. The long blade ends in a crescent-shaped, protruding cutting edge. At the back is a cylinder shaft, decorated with bronze bulges. A striking feature is a sickle-shaped eye on each side. This makes the axe head look like a stylized bird's head.

Dimensions: 9.5cm long.

Condition: Perfect condition. With nice brown patina and some green incrustations.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2023 on the German art market. Previously in the Israeli family collection of art dealer Gideon Sasson. Incorporated into the collection in 1925. Exported in 2022 under Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) approval no. 50526.
