Background: The province of Luristan on the western Persian border is known for its masterful ancient metalwork. Artefacts from this region first reached European museums in the middle of the 19th century. However, it was only at the beginning of the 20th century that the origin of these artefacts could be fully reconstructed. Since then, the artistic and exotic objects have enjoyed great popularity with museums and private collectors. Bronze weapons and jewellery make up the bulk of these collections. This is related to the burial tradition of the time. Even the simpler tombs of Luristan were furnished with bronze weapons or jewellery. On the other hand, ceramics, tools and the like were purely household and not votive objects.
