Object: Luristan hatchet with eyes

Material: Bronze.

Period: 800 BC to 600 BC.
Iron Age III.

Description:    Hatchet head from Luristan stylized as a bird's head. The body is artfully shaped as an elongated triangle, both when viewed from above and from the side. The resulting cutting edges are crescent-shaped and protruding. The shaft hole is located a little behind the middle and is reinforced by a thicker body. It continues downwards as a ribbed cylinder. An eye is located on each side of the thickened body, designed as an almond-shaped bulge with a central iris. This makes the axe head look like a stylized bird's head.

Dimensions: 14.5cm long. Massive and heavy.

Condition: Near perfect condition. Only minor damages, probably from ancient use. With a wonderful green patina.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2023 on the German art market. Previously in the Israeli family collection of art dealer Gideon Sasson. Incorporated into the collection in 1925. Exported in 2022 under Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) permit no. 50526.
