Object: Luristan macehead

Material: Bronze.

Period: 800 BC to 600 BC.
Iron Age III.

Description:    Heavy head of a club in tubular shape, with top and bottom ridges. In the upper third there is a thickening with three rows of almond-shaped humps. The macehead could be placed on a wooden shaft via the central cavity and thus serve as a club.

Background: The bronze head belonged to a club that was probably worn like a badge of rank in military parades in Iron Age Luristan. Very similar finds come from War Kabud and Chamzhi Mumah in what is now Iran. These are grave finds, with a shield boss as an additional find. Exactly this combination is shown Assyrian representations of parade weapons.

Dimensions: 12.0cm long. Approx. 4.6cm diameter.

Condition: Excellent condition. Small hole in the cylindrical shaft, otherwise complete and intact. With a noble dark green patina.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2022 on the German art market. Previously in the Israeli family collection of art dealer Gideon Sasson. Incorporated into the collection in 1925. Exported in 2022 under Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) permit no. 50526.
