Object: Maya pottery bowl

Material: Earthenware with beige slip, painted in red, black and orange.

Period: Early Classic period of the Maya civilization,
approx. 250 AD to 600 AD.

Description:    Flat bowl of almost cylindrical shape, but with a slightly tapered wall. Geometric circle like painting on the bottom and figured painting on the outside wall. Mythical creatures are shown, painted in abstract fashion, reminiscent of a contemporary early comic style.

Dimensions: 19.3cm diameter. 6.5cm height.

Condition: Very good condition with minor restorations and a small missing piece reconstructed at the rim. Stable crack in the wall. The original painting is largely preserved.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the German art market in 2021. Previously in the German family collection E. P. Acquired in the 1960s or 1970s.
