Object: Medieval gilt finger ring.

Material: Silver, gilded with gold.

Period: 14th cent. AD to 15th cent. AD.
Late Middle Ages.

Description:    The finger ring consists of a band that is joined under the ring plate. The inside is flat, the outside is decorated with a relief of linear patterns. The back is finished with a pair of highly stylized, clasped hands. The ring plate is four-leafed, with an engraved cross and diagonal hatchings.

Dimensions: 25mm x 22mm outer diameter. 23.5mm x 20.5mm inner diameter.

Condition: Perfect condition. Ring band not bent and hardly any wear on the gold plating, both of which are rare for antique rings. It makes the ring worthy of being exhibited in a museum or being taken into an important collection.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2023 on the British art market. Exported in 2023 with Arts Council England export licence number PAU/00417/23. Previously in the private British possession of Mick F. Allen. The ring was examined at the British Museum in October 2008. A purchase by the Museum of Canterbury was considered at the time, but did not take place. The ring was found in August 2007 by Mr. Allen in Brookland, Kent, England and subsequently reported as a find under case number 2007 T493.
