Object: Mycenaean pottery stirrup jar

Period: C. 1400 BC to 1300 BC.
Peak of mycenaean pottery production and wide spread trade.
Late Bronze Age.

Description:    Jar with globular body and a decoration of encircling umber bands fired orange in places. With spout and originally also with central strap handle that is now missing for the most part. This is a very characteristic type of vessel for the Mycenaean civilization in Bronze Age Greece.

Dimensions: 9,4cm height. 9,2cm diameter.

Condition: Strap handle broken off and missing. Small restored hole in the bottom. Otherwise well preserved including large parts of the original paint.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2017 from the German private estate of C. Burgdorff, inherited in 1994 with the collection of his father Hans-Guenther Burgdorff. H.-G. Burgdorff bought the piece in the 1940ies in Greece. It remained in the familiy collection in Germany since then.
