Object: Magnificent neck ring from Greece

Material: Bronze.

Period: 9th century BC to 6th century BC.
Iron Age.

Description:    Open neck ring made of solid bronze with a rhomboid cross-section. The terminals are flattened and rolled into spirals. The surface of the ring is smooth towards the terminals, but the rest of the ring surface is decorated with spirals creating the impression of a twisted bronze rod.
Such neck rings, also known as torcs or torques, became famous by their mention in Roman historical descriptions of the Celtic cultures. It is interesting to note the similarities with this piece from Greece.

Dimensions: Solid metal. 13.8cm x 12.4cm boxing size and 11.9cm width inside.

Condition: Great condition. Complete and intact. Beautiful green to blue patina on a well-preserved metal surface, light abrasion in places. A magnificent specimen and particularly impressive due to its size and weight.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the Swiss art market in 2022. Previously in the Swiss private collection Marc Odermatt. Acquired in 1987 from Nefer Gallery in Zurich, Switzerland. A copy of the gallery's expertise is available. The neck ring is probably a find from Greece.
The expertise of Nefer Gallery describes this neck ring as part of a belonging group of bronze objects from the Greek-geometric period. Apparently the gallery had information about the region of the find.

The very similar neck ring described there is located in the archaeological museum of the monastery in Humac in Herzegovina. It is a find from the wider region, which geographically corresponds roughly to the suspected find location for this piece in Greece.
