Object: Apulian skyphos (globular cup with two handles)

Material: Reddish clay with black slip, painted in white and yellow
So-called Gnathia pottery

Date Late 4th century BC
Early Hellenistic epoch

Description:    Globular bowl with high rim and two large handles which are bent to the top at their ends. Double-staged high foot. Decorated with a vine branch with leafs and fruits between the handles on both sides.

Size: Height 86 mm with and 70 mm without handles. Diameter 189 mm with and 116 mm without the handles.

Condition: Nicely perfectly preserved including the original painting. Restoration of a small chip at lip missing, see detail picture (other pictures were taken with restoration still in place). Stable hair cracks which do not have a negative impact on the overall great impression of the piece. Slightly retouched at handles (only visible at very detailed inspection), small professional restoration at foot. Worth the exhibition at a museum.

Provenance: Acquired 2019 from the German private collection G. E. Acquired by G. E. from the German private collection Dr. H. R. Acquired by Dr. R. January 13, 1976, at Herrmann Zirkel, Cologne, Germany, for 1200 DM. Said to have been found in "Southern Italy, Naples Area".

Collection Dr. H. R.: Dr. H. R., who graduated in Classical Philology, was a grammar school (Gymnasium) teacher and a scholar of ancient history. After finishing his studies, he began collecting Roman coins in 1970. Only one year later, Dr. R. started to add other antiquities from the Roman Imperial era to his collection, soon followed by Greek vases which mainly originated from South Italy. The collection was exhibited at his residence in the Rhineland in Germany. The last object of the collection was acquired in 1989.
