Late Roman Imperial, North African type

Description:    Oval elongated body. Flat shoulder with geometric elements and plant decoration. Ridge encircles discus, continuing onto long nozzle to form wide channel. Solid spikelike handle flattened on sides. Raised rounded base ring connected to handle, in the middle of the base area concentric circles.
The mirror shows a duck between two columns or trees decorated with volutes on both end and connected by arch above the duck. Equal size filling holes to both sides of the scene.

Size: Length 134mm, width 81mm, height 54mm incl. handle

Condition: Very good condition. One damaged part restored, in course of which a fragment of the shoulder was re-inserted and missing material remodeled.

Provenance: Acquired 2022 from the German private collection E.S.. Presented to E.S. 2008 by Ms. Margarete Scheubert. Acquired by Scheubert family between 1960 and 1974 in Tunesia, allegedly in El Djem.
Rudolf Scheubert, the husband of Margarete Scheubert, was a diplomat. In the 1960s, the Scheubert family had a close relation to the former ruling family of Tunisia, and was frequently in the country until 1974. Her son, Bernhard (Bernd) Scheubert, who was the partner of E.S., later became internationally famous as the so-called „Tunesienmaler“, i.e. Tunisia painter.
