References: | Levantine lamps of this time were made in an enormous variety, sometimes emulating earlier designs but typically cruder and with variations. While the main types are well published, the numerous variations unfortunately mostly still lack a thorough review. In general, apart from the lamps found in Israel (and early excavations in Antioch), very little published research on lamps from this region as a whole exists. This makes the following entry in the Alte Roemer Online Ancient Oil Lamp Catalogue even more important: Cf. Catalogue Of Ancient Oil Lamps Of The Mediterranean World by Alte Roemer Gallery, in which many oil lamps offered by us are published. |
Provenience: | Bought 2011 in a German auction house. |
Authenticity: | All items are sold with a Certificate of Authenticity. We unconditionally guarantee the authenticity of every artefact, all items are subject to our lifetime return policy on authenticity. |
Expertise: | Authenticity examined and confirmed on the basis of the photographic material by Mr. David Knell, expert for ancient oil lamps and consultant at Sotheby's in the late 1990s - the early 2000s. |
