Date: Second half 1st - first quarter 2nd century A.D.br> Roman Empire, Flavian to Trajanic

Description:    Round oil lamp, long rounded nozzle with simplified shoulder-volutes. Slightly sunken discus, separated from the shoulder by two rings. The discus shows a frontal view of the bearded, helmeted Mars, his head turned to the right, holding a round shield on his left arm and a long spear in his right hand. Ring handle with two grooves on the upper part. Base marked off by one circular groove. Potter's incuse signature: L M V N S V C, beneath small circle. A lamp from the same workshop is on exhibition in the J. P. Getty Museum. Manufactured in North Africa.

Dimensions: Length 111 mm, width 69 mm, height 44 mm

Condition: Perfectly preserved (slightly better than the lamp published in Getty Museum collection)
