Object: Painted Bronze Age jug

Material: Orange clay with beige slip and with brownish-red paint.

Period: Early Bronze Age of Anatolia,
2800 BC to 2000 BC.

Description:    Simple jug made of thick-walled clay. The bulbous body is flattened at the bottom to form a base. At the top it merges into a tapered neck, which flows into a lipless, outward-pointing rim. This is where the ribbon handle starts and runs in a wide arc down to the shoulder. The well-preserved geometric painting on the shoulder, handle, neck and inside of the neck is remarkable. The vessel originates from Anatolia or a neighboring region.

Dimensions: 16.7cm height including handle. Circa 12cm diameter excluding handle or 17cm including handle.

Condition: Excellent condition. Original material completely preserved. Restored at the handle, otherwise intact. Even the original painting is largely preserved, only the lower body is more heavily worn.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2022 on the Swiss art market. Previously in the German private collection Prof. Dr. J. M. Acquired by him between 1962 and 1969 on the Turkish art market.
