Western Iran or Luristan, Middle to Late Bronze Age, C. 2000 BC to 1000 BC. |
Description: |
Ceramic bowl with conical flat base and waist at the high rim. The outer surface is painted in reddish-brown forming three bands and below a geometrical decoration consisting of triangles. The lip is also accentuated in reddish-brown. The shape is imitating early metal vessels made of bronze that were a status symbol and influenced the choice of shapes for pottery as well. Maybe the motivation behind this mimicry was similar to today's practice of metal coating low-cost plastic components to make them appear higher quality. |
