Material: | Stone tesserae, different colours (black, white, grey, red, orange, green, sky-blue). Very intensive colours. |
Size: | Frame: 55 cm x 38 cm. Mosaic: 48,5 cm x 32 cm. The single tesserae measure about 5 mm to 12 mm. Fish: about 40 cm x 22 cm. |
Dating: | Late roman imperial - early byzantine epoch 2nd - 7th century AD. |
Condition: | Exzellent condition, brillant colours. The mosaic was transfered and fixed onto a stable (probably fibre-based) plate and framed with a black metal frame. |
Decription: | Finely worked polychrome mosaic of a fish swimming to the right in front of a white background. The variety of colours leads to a vivid, three-dimensional impression. The fins are worked thoroughly and in high detail. |
Provenance: | Bought 2011 in a German auction house. Ex french collection that was formed in the 1960s. Examined by experts from the Glyptothek Munich (Germany). |
