Object: Powerful and heavy work axe from Denmark

Material: Grey rock.

Period: Circa 2800 BC until 1500 BC.
North European New Stone Age.

Description:    Powerful and heavy work axe from Denmark. The oversized axe head is wedge-shaped and roughly polished on all four sides. The body tapers in a step to a narrower neck.
The relatively rough processing of the surface is in line with the piece being a commodity and tool rather than a showpiece with a purely representative function. So the huge blade was actually shafted and used with great force as an axe. The interesting Neolithic axe type is extremely rare. Archaeologically, it is best known from the Danish main island of Jutland.

Dimensions: 26.8cm long. 8.8cm wide at the tip of the blade, 6.6 wide at the neck, 6.5cm thick at the neck. Impressive size and weight.

Condition: Very good condition. Complete and intact apart from a few probably Stone Age chips.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2022 on the German art market. Previously in the German private collection Pladeck. Acquired into the collection in the 1960s or earlier. Based on the type, we suspect a find in Jutland, Denmark.

Referenzen: Cf. Jeg ser pa oldsager, p. 283, no. 282.

Literatur: A comprehensive overview of the North European Neolithic period is found in the old but still usable standard work by P. V. Glob, Danske Oldsager II, Yngre Stenalder.
