Object: Predynastic beaker with black top

Material: Orange clay with red slip on the body and black near the rim.

Period: Naqada I or II culture,
circa 4000 BC to 3200 BC.
Predynastic Egypt.

Description:    Tall vessel with an almost cylindrical body that tapers and ends flat at the bottom. The shape is that of a beaker. The outside is covered with a red slip and a distinctive black top.
The simple, hand-made clay jar impresses with its timelessly modern shape. The so called black-topped ware is unmistakable among the clay vessels from predynastic Egypt. The type was made exclusively for ritual and funerary purposes.

Dimensions: 19cm height, 10.5cm diameter.

Condition: Almost perfect condition. Clay body complete and intact. Minor bumps on the surface and the rim, as well as abrasion on the foot, which do not disturb the overall impression. The red and black slip is almost perfectly preserved.
