Description: |
Lamp with a large, low round body and long nozzle. Low and thing rim around the filling hole. Flat bottom. Incised line on wick hole. So-called Herodian oil Lamp. This lamp type was used between the last quarter of the 1st century B.C. and until the end of the first century A.D. It is called after king Herod the Great, during whose reign Jesus Christ was born. This lamp type probably was mainly used by the Jewish population and was popular throughout all of Israel. |

Condition: |
Very well preserved, one side of nozzle restored, other than that only slight wear and minor chips on body. Traces of lamp black on the nozzle document the use of the lamp in antiquity.
