Date: Late 5th - 4th century B.C.
Etruscan copy of a classical greek shape

Description:    Ovoid pyxis with flat shoulder and small conical foot. Two vertical handles at the outer side of the shoulder, frames with a small know to each side. With original lid decorated at the top of the knob.

Size: Height 109 mm with and 82 mm without handles, diameter 86 mm. Lid diameter 49 mm.

Condition: Nicely preserved. Body almost undamaged, with small chips at foot and neck. Black slip mostly preserved.

Provenance: Acquired 2018 from the German family collection Bergweiler which was formed over several generations. Acquired by Ä. and P. Bergweiler between 1965 and 1967 at Antiquitätenhandlung Hermann Zirkel, Cologne, Germany. With note reporting that the vessel originates from a museum collection of a Cologne museum (supposedly the Römisch-Germanisches Museum) and that it was found north of Naples.
