Oil lamp with makers mark CAMPILI So-called Firmenlampe or Firmalampe |
Material: |
Red clay with patina
|
Period: |
1st - 2nd century A.D. Roman Empire |
Description: |
Round body, discus carefully removed in ancient times to increase the size of the filling hole. Three small knobs on the shoulder. A high ring surrounds the discus and the elongated nozzle, creating a channel. Bottom with concentric rings, therein makers mark CAMPILI. Possibly from a North African workshop. The CAMPILI mark appears to be rare, we could not find a parallel in the literature at hand. This could explain why an almost identical lamp is on exhibition in the J. Paul Getty Museum, see reference below. |

|
Condition: |
About 12mm x 17mm small part missing on the nozzle bottom side. Otherwise nicely preserved with traces of red-brownish slip. Old sticker "47".
