Object: Ancient ring with intaglio

Intaglio: Red-orange glass imitating carnelian.

Date: About 3rd century AD, Roman Empire.

Description:    Hollow band with D-shaped cross-section, which elegantly widens into a high hollow mount holding a red intaglio.
The intaglio shows a person standing to the left, posing the right leg on an fungus-shaped pedestal and contemplating an object which she or he holds in the hands.

Size: Outer size 22mm x 18mm. inner size 16mm x 15mm.

Condition: Very good condition with original intaglio. Band with some cracks and dents. Generally a very delicate example of ancient Roman craftmanship.

Provenance: Acquired from the German private collection M. Dollinger, who inherited the ring from the German private collection Fritz Rose. The Rose collection was created between 1960 and 1986 through acquisitions made during the numerous travels of the collectors.
