Object: Pair of Roman gold earrings with shield

Material: Gold. Beads made of blue glass.

Period: 2nd century AD to mid 3rd century AD,
Roman Imperial period.

Description:    Matching pair of gold earrings. Each earring consists of a semi-spherical shield with decorative granules. A ring is soldered on the backside of the shield and closes via eyelet and hook. Attached is a pendant with a volute on the upper eyelet and a biconical blue glass bead at the lower end.
This type of earring was widespread in Roman Imperial times, from the provinces north of the Alps through the Balkans to the eastern Mediterranean.

Dimensions: Eyelet with pendant 30mm and 29mm long. The shield is approximately 9mm in diameter. Both earrings together weigh approximately 1.5g.

Condition: Very good condition. The shields and pendants are minimally deformed, which does no harm to the overall impression.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2023 on the German art market. Previously in the German family collection K. J. Mueller. Acquired between 1950 and 1977, presumably from the art market.
