Description: |
The golden fingerring has a thick band that widens towards the ring plate. There an intaglio is set into the ring. It is made of a vibrant red stone and shows a standing person with cone and hat. It is a depiction of the god Hermes. The ring might have once belonged to a trader. It's type is characteristic of the Roman Empire. Similar pieces are known from Southeast Europe. |

19mm x 19mm outer diameter, including intaglio. 16mm x 13mm inner diameter. The intaglio 6.5mm x 5.5mm.

Condition: |
Very good condition. Ring band slightly deformed, but not disturbing. The intaglio is perfectly preserved, possibly re-inserted and fixed in place in modern times. A modern seal impression comes with the ring.

Acquired by us in 2023 on the British art market. From a British private collection. Acquired at Bonhams London auction 30 November 2016, lot 155 (six rings, sold for 6,250 GBP, equivalent to 7,300 EUR at the time). Consigned from the British Broukal family collection, built in the early 1950s.
