Object: Roman gold ring with stone insert

Material: Gold with inserted amethyst.

Period: Approx. 2nd to 3rd century AD.
Roman Imperial Period.

Description:    The gold finger ring has a ring band with circular cross-section. It widens towards the ring plate to form a large hollow body. An oval gemstone made of violet amethyst is set into the ring there.

Dimensions: 20mm x 18mm outer diameter, including intaglio. 16mm x 15mm inner diameter. The amethyst stone 6mm x 6mm.

Condition: Good condition. Ring band slightly deformed. A stable crack through the ring band. In case the ring shall be worn, the crack should be stabilized, otherwise no action is required. The stone is perfectly preserved, possibly affixed in modern times.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2023 on the British art market. From a British private collection. Acquired at Bonhams London auction 30 November 2016, lot 155 (six rings, sold for 6,250 GBP, equivalent to 7,300 EUR at the time). Consigned from the British Broukal family collection, built in the early 1950s.
