Object: Roman medallion as a pendant

Material: Gold.

Period: 1st century AD to 3rd century AD,
Roman Imperial period.

Description:    The medallion has a circular decorative field made of gold sheet. There is an eyelet at the top edge. The rim of the field and eyelet are decorated with ribbed gold wire. In the eyelet there is still a piece of gold ribbon with which the medallion was once worn as a pendant on the ear or on a chain around the neck.
The goddess Fortuna is depicted as a relief in the decorative field. She is standing on a base line in a frontal pose and is dressed in a cloak. Two attributes identify the figure as the mythological goddess of fortune and fate, namely a cornucopia in the left arm and an oar in the right hand. An excellent miniature work of art.

Condition: Perfect condition of the pendant.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the art market in 2022. Previously in the French private collection Levy. Acquired into the collection in 1982.
