Material: Dark clay.

Period: Circa 8th century AD.
Early Middle Ages of Europe.

Description:    Biconical vessel or urn with a short, slightly tapered neck. Outside with decorative strips and stamp decoration.

Dimensions: 21cm diameter. 22cm height.

Condition: A large sherd with beautiful decoration is in place and original. The remaining up to 90% of the body have been modernly remolded and added. A masterful restoration job. Sticker from the Voigtmann collection on the inner edge with the inscription "Buckelurne sächs. 8. Jh. n. Chr. Sievern".

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2021 from the German family estate Voigtmann. The founder of the collection, Mr. Heinz Voigtmann, carried out excavations himself between 1966 and 1981, in cooperation with local archaeologists. Almost all of the objects in his collection came from his finds near Neuss, Germany. However, the find spot of the vessel offered here is Sievern, a place in the Cuxhaven district of Lower Saxony, Germany. At the time part of the Saxon Empire.
