Object number
AR2635
Object: Scarab mounted in a gold ring

Material: The scarab made of greenish grey stone or paste. The mount made of gold.

Period: Third Intermediate Period of Ancient Egypt.
Probably dating to the Nubian Kushite rule of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty, approx. 748 BC to 664 BC.

Description:    The stylized scarab has a plain back. The bottom side has remains of a hieroglyphic inscription: Amun's bark is at the top, below are further signs of which only the Nefer sign can be recognized. What is truely rare about this scarab is the original gold mount it is being held in. It is a fingerring with the hoop consisting of thick gold wire with a circular profile. The ring holds an oval mount for the scarab. Granular gold wire surrounds the oval and the ends of the hoop.
It is a fantastic piece worthy of an exhibition on ancient Egyptian jewellery in its original condition.

Dimensions: Scarab mount 13.5mm long, 10.5mm wide. The ring 19mm x 18mm outer diameter and 16.5mm x 16mm inner diameter.

Condition: The gold ring and the mount in perfect condition including the elaborate granular gold decorations. The scarab in good condition, however with chips and a crack at the bottom side, a restored chip at the top side. The scarab mount can still easily rotate around its own axis.

Provenance: Acquired in 2018 in a European auction house. Consigned from the asset of the collection of orientalist N. Giron (1884 to 1941), that was build before 1941.
