Object number
AR2380
Object: Stamp seal in scaraboid shape

Material: Greenish glass.

Period: Achaemenid period,
5th cent. BC to 4th cent. BC.

Description:    Scaraboid with stamp showing a horseman hunting a lion. The animal on the left side can't be identified as a lion for certain because part of the stamp is missing in that area.
This stunning stamp seal is from the First Persian Empire of the Achaemenids or from parts under Greek control.

Dimensions: 17mm length, 15mm width.

Condition: Restored from several fragments. One fragment has a different patina leading to the conclusion that the seal was shattered already in antiquity and restored only in modern times. Some smaller parts of the original material missing. Despite of the damage the motif of the stamp seal has been largely preserved and can be clearly identified in the impression.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2014 from a German auction house. Previously in the important collection of the notary Dr. Paul Gerhard Langenkamp (1922–2012) from Duesseldorf, Germany. Acquired into his collection from the European art market between the 1940s and 1980s. Many pieces from his collection has been bought at the art specialists Drouot Paris, Palais d’Orsay, Münzen und Medaillen AG Basel and Frank Sternberg AG Zürich.
