Object:        Athenian lekythos (vessel for oil storage)

Material: Red clay with glossy black slip

Date: Around 400 B.C.

Description:    Bulbous lekythos with broad ring-shaped base separated from the body by a deep groove. High conical neck, small flat handle. Covered by glossy black slip on in- and outside with the exception of the bottom.

Size: Height 66 mm, diameter 58 mm

Condition: Good condition. Surface strongly worn with many chips, body undamaged.

Provenance: Acquired 2018 from the German family collection Bergweiler which was formed over several generations. Acquired by Ä. and P. Bergweiler June 10th 1965 at Antiquitätenhandlung Hermann Zirkel, Cologne, Germany.
