Object: Roman bowl made of marbled glass

Material: Opaque glass in white and brown, with a marbling effect.

Period: Late 1st century BC to 1st century AD.
Early Roman Imperial period.

Description:    Finely marbled roman glass bowl. Flat and circular in shape with a wide rim. The vessel's body is made of massive brown and white glass, arranged in a pattern imitating marble.
The bowl is a great example for the high quality glass production during the Early Roman Imperial period.

Dimensions: 98mm diameter. 19mm to 21mm height.

Condition: Professionally restored from a few fragments. The original substance is almost completely preserved, only a small part of the rim is missing. Stable, small crack in the glass. Fantastic overall condition. Sticker on the underside with print "Nico F. Bijnsdorp Private Collection" and inscription of the collection number "326". Also a sticker with print "Collection drs. Hans van Rossum" and inscription of the collection number "HVR 173".

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2022 on the british art market. Previously in the dutch private collection of Nico F. Bijnsdorp, collection no. NFB 326. Exported in 2022 from the Netherlands with export permit. Acquired into the Bijnsdorp colleciton on 13 April 2016 from the dutch private collection of Hans van Rossum, collection no. HVR 173. Acquired into the Rossum collection on 22 October 2012 from the german auction house Koelner Muenzkabinett, auction 98, lot 1087. Previously in the german private collection of Karl Band (1900-1995), Sammlungsnummer 43. Acquired into the Band collection in 1976 from the renowned swiss art dealer Muenzen und Medaillen AG.
