Condition: | Very well preserved lamp. Strong sand patina and mineral deposits on the surface. Soot particles next to the burning hole. |
Description: | Open lamp, flat from, no handle. Filling hole surrounded by a ring. Two volutes between filling hole and nozzle. This type was mainly found in the vicinity of Mamre, literature mentions it as Mamre type accordingly. The city of Mamre is called Ramat-el-Khalil today and is already mentioned in the old testament. It was here, Abraham had his house, where he was visited by angels (Gen. 18:1ff). Abraham has possibly been burried in Mamre by his son Jacob (Gen. 35:27). |
