Object: Spouted jug of the Yortan culture

Material: Orange clay with reddish-brown slip.

Period: Early Bronze Age of Anatolia,
2800 BC to 2000 BC.

Description:    Large jug from the Western Anatolian Yortan culture. Spherical body, flattened at the bottom to form a base. At the top, the body merges into a wide neck with a pulled-out spout. A handle runs from its lip in a flat arc to the shoulder. At this point there are two decorative bulges, stylized arms, that run horizontally to the other side of the body and merge into two hands.

Background:    First finds of this culture surfaced in the year 1900 in a Mysian burial site called Yortan. It is located in a valley south-west of Troy. In the following decates several isolated finds of Yortan culture artefacts became known, but until now their civilization remains a mystery. Stylistic elements and influences of the Yortan culture can also be seen in finds near Troy and from the west coast of Anatolia.

Dimensions: 21.8cm height. 16.7cm diameter.

Condition: Very good condition for a vessel of this size and age. The body is professionally restored from several fragments without any significant additions. Numerous small to medium-sized chips cover the body. The original slip is largely preserved, but has eroded in some areas. The surface otherwise shows a worthy patina of age and sintering. Overall, an impressive vessel.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2022 on the Swiss art market. Previously in the German private collection Prof. Dr. J. M. Acquired by him between 1962 and 1969 on the Turkish art market.
