Object: Statue of Anubis in jackal form

Material: Wood with white remains of gesso and remains of black and red paint.

Period: Late Period of Ancient Egypt,
26th to 31st dynasty,
664 BC to 332 BC.

Description:    Wooden statue of a jackal with remains of white gesso and black and red pigments. The animal is crouching on its rear legs, stretching out its front legs, the head is raised. There is a notch at the head where once the pointy ears were attached. A further notch at the rear side once accomodated the tail. The statuette is a depiction of the god Anubis appearing as a jackal. This form was used for example to be mounted on a sarcophagus lid and related to the god's function in embalming the dead. The holes for riveting at this figure's bottom side indicate that it could have been used in exactly this way.

Background: The god Anubis is mainly depicted in his role as god of death. In this function he takes care of embalming and mummifying and other services for the dead. There are also well-known scenes from the Book of the Dead in which he is the Guardian of the Scales in the weighing of the heart test procedure.

Dimensions: 25cm long, 6cm wide, 8cm high.

Condition: Wooden body fully intact, only small pieces missing. Notches for inserts at the head and rear side, now missing. Holes for riveting at the bottom side. Part of the original gesso and pigments are still present. Old sticker reading "75A CP00 IV" at the bottom side.
