Object: Sumerian ram amulet

Material: Red and black stone.

Period: 3rd Millenium BC.
Sumerian.

Description:    Small amulet in the shape of a stylized ram. The animal is depicted with strong body, big head and short legs. The body is pierced vertically so that the ram could be suspended and worn as an amulet.

Dimensions: 14mm length.

Condition: Minor damage to the horns, otherwise perfect condition.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2020 from G. Vandervort, USA. Previously in the collection of the US-American California Museum of Ancient Art (inventory no. 01432), donated to the museum in June 1985. Syria has been passed down as find region.
This piece is thus from a period of Sumerian dominance and stylistically similar to Sumerian amulets, but not from their core territory.
