Object: Sword from the European Bronze Age

Material: Bronze.

Period: Ca. 1250 BC to 1100 BC.
Later Bronze Age of Central Europe.

Description:    Bronze sword with straight blade, slowly tapering towards the tip. The blade transitions into a broadening and then a hilt, surrounded by a raised rim. There are four holes for rivets at the hilt and another four at the broadening. With them a grip insert could be held in place.
The sword belongs to the so-called Reutlingen type, made in Central Europe. The name goes back to a find spot in today's Germany (see literature reference). The fantastic state of preservation and the size of the blade impress and give a glimpse into the weapons of the Late Bronze Age.

Dimensions: 57.3cm long (sword only, without modern mount), 5.1cm wide.

Condition: Near perfect condition. A small missing part at the tip. A chip to the blade in the middle section and in front of the grip. The surface has a beautiful green patina. The rivet holes of the handle were used for the modern mount as well. That mount is made of black coated metal. It can be inserted into an acrylic glass base so that the sword will stand upright, giving an impressive sight.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2022 on the Swiss art market. Acquired in 2001 from the German family collection Hofmann. Added to the collection before 1939.
